barrow-wight-hangout-zone said: imo the broadest distinction that needs to be made when discussing “Southern culture” is Upland vs Lowland. They’re obviously related, but up until fairly late in the 20th century there were distinct linguistic and cultural differences between the two going back centuries. State populations even split during the civil war on geographic lines; “Mountain Feds” were a thing in several confederate states. Beyond that you can start splitting things up by state, mountain range, river deltas, etc.
