It is a good city! I grew up in the suburbs, we were taught that it was a number of factors though: a) Chicago is the highest population city in the “center” of the country, making it ideal for transportation b) the Great Chicago Fire happened right around when trains were getting big, but before cars, so it was in a unique position to have good train infrastructure that wasn’t overruled by cars (the fire is also the reason Chicago is known for skyscrapers)
