USPS & Amtrak are best friends

they're both things that really should just be taxpayer-funded government agencies and yet have been semi-privatized and somehow also expected to make a profit because neolibs are the worst (amazingly, the USPS actually did make a profit until 2007 when they started having to set aside employee pensions 50 years in advance which is just such an obvious ploy to destroy the post office)

anyway i think USPS is far too powerful of an entity to ship with anyone. on close inspection they appear to be made entirely out of paper-mache. they are the trickster archetype of the government, always rambling across the land, talking with everyone, hearing and telling all tales there are to tell, and they never stay in one place for very long.

AND THIS IS WHERE AMTRAK COMES IN

THE MAIL TRAVELS BY RAIL

amtrak is always stressed as all hell and constantly looks like he's just been through ten miles of bad railroad and he just wants to get people places why is that so hard why does the world make this so hard why are these freight companies all so damn mean etc etc

USPS's near-constant presence is just about the only thing keeping Amtrak from cracking under the pressure because let's be real anyone would if they didn't have a friend there to help them. every time a train derails Amtrak goes to cry in the caboose and USPS comes to sit down next to him with a nice hot cup of tea and a hug and a couple stories they've heard on the road and tells him that it'll be okay, that life will go on, and that this isn't the end of the world.

and maybe sometimes they go up to the observation car, and look up at the stars and wonder how NASA's doing. or maybe they look out at the landscape rolling by and talk about what NPS and EPA are up to these days. and perhaps they think of everyone else they haven't seen in ages

USPS, of course, has been struggling to make ends meet for the last 15 years, not that anyone knows that. they're the rock that's always there for everyone and they don't want to bother anyone else with their problems, even though they really probably should.

i call it Mail by Rail and i will defend it with my life.

Honestly I really like the idea that all the agencies are riding on a train together, it creates a lot of interesting dynamics and settings
