I'm dumb what's the difference between light rail and heavy rail? is the LIRR light rail or heavy rail?
Lightrail is usually smaller, cheaper, and can carry less people typically. Lightrail is typically similar to a tram but faster and more often grade separated. The advantage of heavy rail is how it is faster than light rail, and can carry more people farther. Basically Light rail is better for a close but not dense area while Heavy is better for more dense larger areas. Examples of Heavy rail would be the New York Subway, Chicago L, and yeah the LIRR, while light rail would be thing like the SLC metro, Milan Metro and the Seattle Link.
On the left is the Seattle Link and on the right is the Chicago L
