I'm thinking of planning a trip from Chicago to San Diego, do you know if a simple and effective route exists? And if it would be comfortable?

I was looking up flights, just for reference, and it would cost $1000 for two round trip tickets!!!! That's bananas and I hate planes!

This will be over 1000 dollars but the route is California Zephyr -> coast starlight -> pacific Surfliner. It should be comfortable though
