Do you or your followers have any advice for making the most of an abysmal public transit system and/or encouraging the city to improve it? I can’t drive and would love to be able to take the bus, but last time I accidentally got on the wrong bus and had to get off at a stop on the side of a busy highway and hitchhike because the busses were running 45 minutes behind and the city transit app doesn’t tell you which bus number is supposed to be running your route. That’s my worst bus story, but every single time I’ve tried to take the bus in the several months I’ve lived here it’s been twenty minutes early, thirty minutes late, or simply never showed up despite being scheduled. Once it took over an hour to reach my stop. Is there any hope for successfully using or improving transit that’s this bad?
I think all transit systems can be fixed, it just requires community support, good leadership and consistent funding. The ways you can get this is by talking to your neighbors, running for local office, and either working with or joining your local transit advocacy group. You need to make sure that transit is something people care about, and you need to form a coalition to improve it. Even Amsterdam was once a car centric city.
