The London, Chatham and Dover Railway and the South Eastern Railway were two railway companies that operated commuter, suburban, and boat trains from the City, through south-east London and into Kent. Unlike most railway companies, they co-existed on the same turf, and their rivalry was fierce; like a game of chess, they tried to predict each other's moves and check their advances, resulting in a tangle of overlapping, duplicate lines, with poor connections between them. These strategic lines were often deeply unprofitable, and both companies were driven to financial ruin through their years of fighting, and they were forced to merge.
