Core tenants of Urbanism, in my mind
- Change is possible
- Density is good for cities
- Cars have damaged our cities and should be de prioritized by cities
- Parking lots are bad land use
- Urban highways should be removed or capped
- Cities and urban living are better for health and community than suburbs
- Community outreach matters
- Transit is a necessity for cities due to sustainability and efficiency
- Rail is a preferred method of transit
- Bike infrastructure needs to be built to decrease car dependence
- Cities are the most sustainable way of life
- Parks are needed space for community and health
- Zoning laws, Minimum Parking and setbacks restrict housing
- Housing needs to be affordable for all
I'd also add an emphasis on maintenance! Everyone wants to be the person to design some great new building or transit project but maintaining what we already have is also necessary and should be emphasised
That is a good point, we all want to leave a legacy, but maintaining the good that exists is equally important to creating new things that are good
when ten good things are built on one very good thing and no one bothers maintaining the very good thing, you suddenly have one bad thing and ten things that don't work at all, which swiftly becomes eleven bad things.
that's true in pretty much every field, now that i think about it.
All forms of disability accessibility are necessary and integral to every community!!!
I knew I forgot something, I agree with this whole heartedly
I do need to correct the Houston Zoning Laws thing. We don't have a unified system of zoning laws but we do have various rules and regulations over the years that have been passed that all add up to form a make shift zoning system, where we essentially got all the downsides and none of the positives.
