Urban design concept of the day!
Induced Demand
Induced Demand is the concept that you can iduce demand for something by making it more easy to do and available, The most common example is with roads where the more lanes you add to a road, the more traffic it will have, this is because more people will use said road, and the exits off it will still have the same capacity meaning that bottlenecks are created causing traffic as people exit the freeway or road.
This is not to say induced Demand is always bad as there are good forms, building and repairing sidewalks, expanding transit and building bike lanes are all good forms of induced Demand as the create a Demand to use those forms of transit by making them more attractive to a person than a vehicle.
