Induced Demand
The more lanes you add to a road, the more traffic it will have, this is because more people will use said road, and the exits off it will still have the same capacity meaningt that bottlenecks are created causing traffic as people exit the freeway or road
I've also begun to hypothesis that the distance between exit and outside lane will cause greater congestion. People will try to go the shortest distance from the farthest positions slowing lanes drastically.
I mean yeah, one of the largest causes of traffic is people switching lanes, that is part of why induced Demand worsens traffic
Now Induced Demand is not bad in and of itself, by itself it is just the fact that Demand can be induced by actions, for example removing road space for a streetcar creates induced Demand for the streetcar as it encourages people to use it, the issue at play is the fact that highway induces more Demand for said highway worsening traffic as described above.
