Uh oh, yeah those tunnels need replacing way sooner than the current schedule
You know what's really fun!
We have like...no idea how those are still standing. Is it the Pennsy engineering team was just THAT good?! Maybe!!!! Is it dumb luck? ALSO MAYBE!!!!!!
But it's okay!!!!!! Let's make the waiting rooms nicer instead!!! And not add any more tunnels or infrastructure!!!!
I mean they are replacing the tunnels but the estimated completion date 2035 and the repairs of the current tunnels are going to finish in 2038
I know I just wish they did the tunnels first BEFORE Moynihan. Which may be silly of me but.
That's fair, but the tunnels take much more time than the station and from what I understand, Amtrak and the Feds want to have some visible results of the investment to get public approval for the less shiny but more needed projects
Reminder that we did studies for new tunnels under the Hudson literally 30 years ago and the infrastructure project that was going to build them was cancelled by Chris Christie in 2010 because of *potential* cost overruns. If im reading it right we spent nearly half a BILLION dollars on a project that *didnt happen* because some fuckass cancelled it on the grounds that it would cost too much.
Gateway Program (Northeast Corridor) - Wikipedia en.wikipedia.orgThe new project that is currently under construction was pulled from the wreckage of the old project (that would have included more infrastructure improvements) and didnt break ground until over a decade later. We might see one of the most important connections in the country literally just stop working with no replacement in the next few years and that is a scary thought. At best they might be able to close one tunnel at a time (halving capacity for a tunnel that is already basically over capacity) for urgent repairs but I really REALLY hope that nothing fails catastrophically.
I love the fact that we have a system where necessary public infrastructure is able to be prevented due to one guy not wanting to pay for it and is so good and not terrible at all
