People love to support new housing till it has a style which doesn't 100% match with the existing neighborhood of shotgun houses and bungalows from the late 1800s
Like people freak out anytime something doesn't match architecturally with its surroundings when fun fact: that's supposed to happen, buildings get torn down and rebuilt and change, a city is a living organism
Also old neighborhoods are so pretty because there weren't hard restrictions on the look of buildings, do you think that beautiful blue door would be up if there was a strict zoning code on architecture, you can't even replace windows in some parts of San Francisco
I think that fights over the looks of buildings just make housing more expensive to build in old neighborhoods and that worsens the housing shortage as it means fewer less dense buildings get built in a given area because of architectural guidelines constricting what can be built too far.
