This is just a facet of the issue perhaps, and relies on an assumed deep emotional connection between the two, but maybe make sure to have the death have weight beyond the first few lines? She might be dead, but she's still a character - part of the issue of fridging is the inherent objectification (ie. A death only impactful for the first 30 words before being discarded for story that completely overrules the grief without satisfactory acceptance / etc.)

Yeah that makes sense, the issue is she died 2 years prior to the story starting which makes it hard for the main character to still be grieving her. I mean the entire story is set in motion by the fall out of her death so it wouldn’t be as though her death has no relevance to the plot
