I don't get housing arguments since the solution is pretty much always a mix of build more housing, make people live in the vacant units and a little bit of rent control
Like everyone knows that housing is only so insanely expensive because there's a shortage of it so making people live in empty units and building new apartments is an obvious solution, so why do people oppose it.
Is there a shortage? I keep hearing there are more empty houses than homeless people and that real estate speculators sit on empty apartment units for vague tax purposes.
Building new housing has been found to stop rent increases, but yes forcing people to sell homes that aren't their primary occupancy, banning short term non owner operated rentals, and vacancy taxes are all also an important part of the puzzle
Also having a larger and more robust housing supply can benefit everyone as it gives people more options for housing and lowers the cost since even if we did just give everyone a home, housing would still be too expensive for many working families
