But that's the importance of Rent, it isn't a retrospective looking back on the AIDS crisis, it's written contemporaneously in the midst of the AIDS crisis, about the AIDS crisis and written by a victim of the AIDS crisis.
My 2 favorite plays are other contemporary accounts of the AIDS crisis from the 90s which I feel do that role much better
