CAHSR is an incredibly important project and the opposition to it is emblematic of larger issues. It is being opposed because it is viewed as a waste of taxpayer money and it is taking to long. This ignores the long timelines and low returns of highways that are enthusiasticly supported by its opponents. This also ignores that the routing wasn’t fully designed by the vote and design work had to be done during the past 16 years, and there were 2 economic crashes during the time of the construction. This project is opposed for 2 main reasons, conservatives want to privatize rail and HSR is a threat to car companies. There is barely any complaints about the private Brightline West despite it being expected to have 400 dollar tickets, taking just as long to begin construction, and being a private project funded with public money. One of the big threats to California High-speed Rail was the proposal of the Hyperloop that Elon Musk used to delay the project for years which as he admitted was done to stop the High-speed Rail line because it won’t be profitable to him.
