chatdomestique asked:
Since you know so much about US cities, what place would you recommend for someone who wants to be close to nature but also wants to never touch another car again?
amtrak-official answered:
I would unironically suggest Philadelphia, it has a good parks system, and access to a lot of nature via the regional rail system. The other option is Seattle since they have busses to Olympic National Park.
Honestly, the only city I’ve ever really given consideration is Colorado Springs 😅
I’ve always kinda assumed that major cities like Philadelphia or Seattle would just be dirty and cramped and separated from nature. I never really gave it any thought before.
With Philly, you definitely need to know how to get to the nature and be strategic about where you choose to live but it is possible to access nature by transit, a whole 13% of the city is parkland and if you really need to get away from the city, the Delaware Water Gap is a bus ride away.
With Seattle, I don’t know a lot about its park systems but it’s really close to several national parks and has a few large parks
People in the notes also suggested Portland which has the massive Forest park and 16% of its land area is parks
