Ahhh, This is in reference to fucking Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue (shown Below), What do you mean it has no merit, it's such a fucking influential piece, you are allowed to not get it but seriously you are the problem if you don't think that art you find ugly has merit. All art has merit no matter whether you like it or not.
The idea that all art has to be appealing to us personally is dumb, you don't have to like every piece in a gallery or show, but you have to be able to recognize that art you dislike still has merit and value as art.
I think the inability to recognize the merit of art we don’t like comes from the capitalistic commodification of art and how we view it as an asset to be bought and sold based off an arbitrary value created from our views on its quality and craftsmanship. If art wasn’t purely seen as something to be bought and sold I think we would be more open to appreciate the existence of art we dislike because Bad Art isn’t real
