Girl, they're windowsills, you put a cushion there so you are able to sit and ponder your place in the world while looking out over the Chicago river, well either that or you put some plants there, but it is really not a wasted space
I looked and there was an update, it looks like they did get some cushions and put them on the windowsill but they put a sectional couch in front of the window as well which makes it harder to get onto the window to stare longingly at the river
