Hot take: Chicago would’ve been a great Olympics host
amtrak-official answered:
Yeah, I really wish they got the 2016 Olympics, yes there is the issue of that giant unnecessary stadium in Washington Park, but the rest of the plans would have been amazing and helped to bring Chicago back to its place as a world city
Honestly what the 2016 Olympics did to South America's prestige even just for a moment already shows that, the thing is, people not from the United States and Europe (and Japan) deserve to hav nice things too
That's fair, Rio did really deserve the Olympics, I just was Blinded to that by my obsession with Chicago
Honestly if Chicago had made a bid for this year's Olympics they could have gotten something, Los Angeles (who's going to host in 2028) isn't the most attractive place
Yeah LA is not the best city in the US, I think we could do better and LA already hosted it so I think a city that never hosted the Olympics should have done in in 28
I believe the Los Angeles bid was presented as the “budget option”. We’ve still got a lot of stuff left over from the 84 and even the 32 Olympics (fun fact: my Alma mater CSUDH’s stadium was built for the 84 games and has the torch in its archive) and the later games were the last time an Olympics actually made a profit. It also helped that we were one of only a handful of cities to actually bid
It’s actually just LA and Paris were the only 2 cities that were bidding for 24 so they split the difference and gave 24 to Paris and 28 to LA
