Dear Amtrak,

I live in a big city (NYC) but I want to visit the woods. For wandering and such. I do not have a car, can Amtrak get me there? Are there any national parks or state parks or such things accessible by Amtrak?

Thanks, Ole.

While the most famous park accessible by transit is probably Glacier National Park on the Empire Builder, there are some closer to NYC that are accessible.

Notably Lake Champlain and a good portion of the Adirondacks are accessible by both the Adirondacks line and the Ethan Allen Express.

The Delaware Water Gap is harder to access but The Main and Bergen Line from NJTransit can take you from Hoboken to Suffern where you can transfer to the Metro North Port Jarvis Line. In Port Jarvis you can catch a bus to the Gap

What would be your best recommendation for rail travel from Eugene, OR to Albany, NY? I hate planes and I don't wanna drive all that way in a rental car.

I would do Cascades to Portland, then Empire Builder to Chicago then Lakeshore Limited to New York, from New York take the Adirondack or Empire Service to Albany

Any suggestions for cheap (preferably <$100) vacations we could take over the summer with amtrak from DC? We normally go to Florida but prob won't this year for obvious reasons.

amtrak-official answered:

It is 50 dollars for a ride on the Cardinal from DC to Thurmond, where you could then visit New River Gorge National Park and go white water rafting or go on a hike or see the abandoned coal infrastructure

Same question but for NYC?

amtrak-official

You can get an Adirondack train for 70 bucks on a weekday(not friday) . On the line, you can visit Lake Champlain at Whitehall and canoe or kayak, go on a hike, or just swim in the lake
