It is 50 dollars for a ride on the Cardinal from DC to Thurmond, where you could then visit New River Gorge National Park and go white water rafting or go on a hike or see the abandoned coal infrastructure

You can get an Adirondack train for 70 bucks on a weekday(not friday) . On the line, you can visit Lake Champlain at Whitehall and canoe or kayak, go on a hike, or just swim in the lake
